Activities:

1951

Advocate & Solicitor
Legal Adviser to several trade unions.

1954

Helped found People's Action Party (PAP).
Became Secretary-General. Held this office, except for brief period in 1957, until November 1992.

Apr 1955

Contested General Elections for the Tanjong Pagar Constituency, a working-class dock area, and became one of three PAP Assemblymen. Has remained the representative of Tanjong Pagar Constituency since 1955. 

May 1959

PAP won the General Elections, 43 out of 51 seats (53.40 per cent of votes cast). Formed government. Became Prime Minister.

Sep 1963

Won General Election, 37 seats out of 51(46.46 per cent of votes cast).

1963 - 1965

One of 15 representatives from Singapore to the Parliament of Malaysii from 16 September 1963 until 9 August 1965, when Singapore separated from the Federation.
Won General Elections in 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1991 and 1997.

Nov 1990

Resigned as Prime Minister.
Appointed Senior Minister by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.
